Uses of Scottish Thistle

The Scottish Thisle is mostly used now as an ornamental plant, but it had many uses in Europe in the past.

Medicinal
The juice is said to have been applied to cancers and ulcers to alleviate them. The juice has also been recorded to remedy rickets in children.
A decoction of the root can be used as an astringent as well as reducing discharges from mucous membranes.
Food
The juicy globe which surrounds the flower has been used similarily to the artichoke, husked and eaten. The young stalks, when stripped of their rind, may be eaten like those of the Burdock.
Technological
The cotton is occasionally collected from the stem and used to stuff pillows.
It has been recorded that the oil obtained from the seeds has been used for burning, both in lamps and for ordinary culinary purposes.
