I propose to put my knowledge earned in this course to the test. I will try to survive off of the wild plants of Vancouver for several days. The reason I would like to try to do this is that during the first few days of class, I realized just how disconnected I was from the food I consumed every day. This epiphany got me thinking: what would I do if my usual resources for food (stores, community gardens, farms, etc.) were to one day not exist? If there was, say, no resources or security to even cultivate land on my own. In this case I would have to survive off of wild plants that grew within the city.

With this in mind, I will attempt to survive for 24 hours in the city on absolutely nothing but wild plants. If this works, I will consume again the meals for another 24 hours, making a 48 hour survival kick.

I realize that the food that I will be eating will not be a true representation of surviving in Vancouver. This is because I will only be using what is immediately available to me in this season. I will have had very little time to prepare in knowledge and technique so I predict that my diet will not be complete and therefore not really a method of survival. Also, I understand that to truly survive through gathering for some time is to implement storage processes which I will not be doing since this is a short term experiment.

From all of this I hope to gain the following: a better appreciation for both my food and the landscape of Vancouver as well as a more fruitful knowledge through experiencing and not just reading.
