People Related to Salal Berry

Traditionally some of the Uses of Salal Berry by the Pacific Northwest coastal First Nations has included, but is not limited, to such diverse groups as the Tsimshian, Coast Salish, Straits Salish, Saanich, Nuu-chah-nulth, Squamish, Kwakwaka’wakw, and the Haida Gwaii. The significance of this plant to the aboriginal people of this region can be clearly observed in the quantity and variety of names that are used for the berries, plants and leaves. An example would be the three bands of the Haida Gwaii, the Skidegate (S), Massett (M), Alaskan (A), that have at least 11 names to categorize the Salal Berry plant which are listed below:
Berries or bush:
- ski’idgaan (S)
- sk’idaan
- sk’id7aan (M)
- sk’itáan (A)
- taan gaanga (S)
Plant or leaves:
- sk’iid
- sk’idgaan xil (S)
- sk’iihla
- sk’iihl
- sk’iihla hlk’a.aay (M)
To pick a whole cluster of salal berries:
- hlk’waakuusda (S)
