Botanical Name

A plant's botanical name is its formal scientific name. The purpose of a formal name is to have a single name that is accepted and used worldwide for a particular plant or plant group.
A botanical name consists of the plant's genus and species. For example, the botanical name for fireweed is Epilobium angustifolium; based on this, we know the genus is Epilobium and the species is angustifolium.
Botanical names are usually italicized.
